Broken Arrow police make two kidnapping arrests in two days

Broken Arrow police arrested two people in two days who had nothing to do with kidnappings.

In both cases, the victims were adults and knew their captors, and the interactions began consensually.

“In these two cases I would say they are unique in some ways because one of them was a former family member and the other, this one with the truck driver. They were friends online, so it wasn’t something where “It was an incident between strangers,” said Ethan Hutchins, BAPD public information coordinator.

Police said they arrested a truck driver named Jerry Lee Newman at the Walmart on Elm in Broken Arrow on Tuesday. They say he sexually assaulted and kidnapped a man he was driving from Kansas City to Oklahoma. According to investigators, the two met there and drove to Oklahoma as part of a planned trip. Eventually the ride took a turn as they approached Broken Arrow.

“The victim alleges that Mr. Newman attempted to aggressively engage in some type of sexual activity with the victim. The victim mentioned to our officers that he was trying to get out of the vehicle, that truck, and that Mr. Newman wouldn’t allow that, and.” So when they finally got to Broken Arrow, the victim was able to escape from the truck and sent texted 911 asking for help,” Hutchins said.

In a separate case, police said they arrested Keith McCaslin on Monday on charges of kidnapping, domestic violence, sexual battery and public drunkenness.

Police said they received two calls about McCaslin and a younger woman in a vehicle engaging in sexual activity. According to police, the victim said she and McCaslin were family friends and that she was attacked and held against her will.

“Unfortunately, incidents like this happen in our community and every other community, and our department is very focused on investigating these incidents and taking these suspects into custody,” Hutchins said.

Police want to remind people that in a situation like this where you cannot call 911, you can always text if you are in Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Glenpool, Jenks, Owasso, Sand Springs , Sapulpa, etc. live in Skiatook as well as Osage, Tulsa and Rogers counties.
