Maryland mother found guilty of child neglect following child’s death

A mother of six was found guilty of child neglect following the death of one of her children in 2022, a Maryland judge announced Wednesday after a seven-day trial.

On May 10, 2022, officers responded to the Montgomery Village home of 41-year-old Cynthia Moore, a mother of six, for a report of an unresponsive child. When officers entered the home, they discovered the family was living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The unresponsive child, a 17-year-old, later died, officials said.

Following a government investigation into the child’s death, Cynthia and her husband Dominique Moore were arrested and charged in 2023. Both were charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and child neglect.

Officials said Cynthia faces up to 30 years in prison and her sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2025. Dominique, meanwhile, is scheduled to go on trial on November 4, 2024.

“We stand by the charges brought by the state in this case and are disappointed with this verdict. We reserve further comment at this time as there is still a co-defendant whose charges are pending,” said Lauren DeMarco, spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s Office.
