A neighbor describes a harrowing scene after a child was allegedly hit by a car in downtown Bakersfield

Neighbor Sebastian Cruz said he heard many people screaming and crying after an alleged accident that injured a child in downtown Bakersfield Wednesday afternoon.

Eyewitness News has learned reports from neighbors that a child was hit at Holtby Road and Bank Street just before 2 p.m., but police have not confirmed this at this time.

Cruz said he saw a small child’s bicycle with blood on it. “It was clear that a child was probably run over,” he said.

“People drive pretty fast on this road all the time,” Cruz said. “It’s a wide street. And they feel like they can’t hit anything. They feel too comfortable on wide streets.”

Cruz said there was so much noise that he thought there was a fight. He heard a woman crying and saw her lying on the ground.

Eyewitness News is working to learn more from the Bakersfield Police Department, which is investigating the incident. The child’s condition is currently unknown.
