Cool conditions prevailed in New York City this morning, with temperatures barely climbing above the 30s across most of the Tri-State area. The cold weather even led to frost warnings for parts of the region.

“We got off to a very cool start this morning, with temperatures about 10° cooler than normal,” FOX 5 NYs Mike Woods said in a post on X, officially Twitter.

There will be mostly sunny skies today, but temperatures will not rise above 60°.

Conditions Wednesday morning will be similar to this morning, with mostly clear skies and temperatures around 40 degrees.

“We’re starting even cooler tomorrow morning, hard to believe, but it is,” Woods said.

Similar temperatures will persist during the work week leading up to the weekend.

“We have above average temperatures heading into next weekend and the sun is shining,” Woods said.

The warm-up is expected to begin on Sunday with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 70s.

Meanwhile, a layer of snow fell over Saranac Lake, New York, on Monday morning, and snowflakes could be seen outside the Hotel Saranac in the quaint Adirondack Village.

Additional footage from Chris Luft also showed light snowfall on nearby Lake Placid.

La Niña is still late, and when it finally arrives, it doesn’t look like it will last long now, and that could change some of the seasonal winter outlook.

“A weaker La Niña means traditional winter impacts would be less likely to occur,” NOAA wrote in its October forecast update. “However, predictable signals could still influence the forecast.”

If La Niña conditions occur in time for winter, it would normally result in an overall wetter, cooler winter in the northern United States and a drier, milder winter in the south.

But with a weak La Niña now expected, the pattern is unlikely to have as much of an impact. In this case, when neutral phase conditions prevail, there are fewer kinks in the jet stream, meaning more regional patterns dominate the local weather. A weak La Niña may only occasionally shift the pattern toward conditions preferred for La Niña.
