Central Community College is hosting a criminal justice career day

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – Nearly 75 students from 10 high schools in Nebraska visited Central Community College on Wednesday for their first annual Criminal Justice in Action Day.

Students who attended the event learned what it takes to work in the legal and justice systems. Students learned about a variety of topics including a mock trial, SWAT and rescue, a K-9 unit and what it takes to be a Nebraska State Trooper.

Brian Hoffman, associate dean of CCC’s criminal justice program, said the event was created to raise awareness of the criminal justice field in area high schools.

“Our program’s growth has increased over 400 percent in five years, so it’s a great area to have,” Hoffman said. “What is important is the ability to attract great students to the program and provide the community with great employees in the future.”

Additionally, Hall County Sheriff’s Department K-9 handler and deputy Ryan Grief said he wanted to bring his K-9 (Zeus) to Career Day so students could understand the ins and outs of law enforcement.

“We wanted to come here to show the younger generation our capabilities and show how far law enforcement is advancing,” Graf said. He also said that it is easier to engage with the younger generation given the different skills and technologies that government agencies have.
