Former One Direction star Liam Payne has tragically died aged 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. Local police confirmed that the incident occurred at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in Palermo.

According to reports in local newspapers La Nacion and Clarin, police were called to the hotel in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires after receiving a 911 call about “an aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.” Paramedics later confirmed the death of Liam Payne, who was discovered in the interior terrace of a hotel, as described in news reports.

Who was Liam Payne?

Liam Payne rose to fame as part of the legendary boy band One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. The group formed on The X Factor in 2010 and announced a hiatus in 2015. Payne later pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album LP1 in 2019, followed by Teardrops in March of that year.

As a member of One Direction, Liam Payne was part of one of the most influential boy bands in modern history. The group is considered one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, having sold over 70 million records worldwide. After a successful run from 2010 to 2016, One Direction announced an indefinite hiatus to allow all five members to pursue solo careers.

Payne launched his solo career in 2017 with the hit single “Strip That Down” featuring Migos member Quavo, which reached the top 10 in the US and peaked at number 3 in the UK. In December 2019, he released his debut album LP1, which charted at number 17 in the UK. Earlier this year, he released his latest single “Teardrops” along with an acoustic version.

Liam opened up about his battle with alcohol and suicidal thoughts. Just last year, he shared that he had been sober for over three months, explaining, “I’ve been sober for over 100 days now. I feel great, really, really good, and the support from the fans has been incredible, so I’m super happy.”

He is survived by his son, born in 2017, whom he shared with singer Cheryl Cole.
