Palo Alto police have arrested a Menlo Park resident who they say struck another man in the head with a golf club near a creek bank Monday afternoon, causing a serious head injury, police said.

The man, a Menlo Park resident, is charged with attempted murder for the attack, which occurred near the 2000 block of East Bayshore Road around 3:35 p.m. The victim was treated at a local hospital and is expected to survive, according to a news release.

The man with a golf club allegedly approached the other man while he and his girlfriend were near the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The two men began arguing, at which point the man struck the other man with the golf club and threatened to kill him, the release said. The woman reported that when her boyfriend fell to the ground, the man picked up a nearby kitchen knife and threatened to kill him again. Police said the man fled on his bike after the woman intervened.

Palo Alto police identified the man with the golf club as a 48-year-old Menlo Park resident. They obtained an arrest warrant for attempted murder and felony murder and the man turned himself in to East Palo Alto police Wednesday morning, police said. Palo Alto detectives then took him into custody and took him to the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the department’s 24-hour emergency hotline at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be sent to [email protected] or 650-383-8984.
