A bridge collapses in an industrial accident in Simpson County

SIMPSON COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – Officials are responding to the collapse of a bridge over the Strong River in Simpson County on Wednesday.

Anna Ehrgott, public information officer for the Mississippi Department of Transportation, confirms that a bridge over the Strong River on State Route 149 collapsed in an industrial accident.

Ehrgott said the bridge has been closed to traffic since Sept. 18 as part of a bridge replacement project. TL Wallace Construction, a Columbia-based company, was in the process of demolishing the bridge.

There is currently no confirmation as to whether any workers were injured or trapped in the accident.
