Los Angeles County, California, reported two additional locally acquired properties yesterday Dengue fever Infections that are part of a cluster of cases from Baldwin Park total five since September 9th.

A case in Panorama citylocated about 40 miles west of Baldwin Park, was reported on September 25, and two cases in El Monte in early October are not considered linked to the Baldwin cluster. None of the affected patients had a history of travel to tropical regions where the mosquito-borne virus is endemic.

“This small local outbreak raises concerns about the ongoing spread of dengue fever and the possibility of spread to other areas of LA County,” LA Public Health continued X. “Everyone in LA County should take steps to prevent mosquito bites and mosquito breeding.”

On October 6th San Diego County announced the discovery of locally acquired dengue fever in an Escondido resident. Pasadena And Long BeachCalifornia each reported one such case in autumn 2023.

Mosquito avoidance is urgently needed

In the press release, Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, said that preventing mosquito bites “can be as simple as using insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites, eliminating standing water around your home, where Mosquitoes can breed, and.” Keep your home mosquito-free by using or installing fly screens on your doors and windows.

This small local outbreak raises concerns about the ongoing spread of dengue and the possibility of spread to other areas of LA County.

Dengue fever usually causes no symptoms but can cause high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash and minor bleeding. About one in 20 infections results in shock, severe bleeding and organ damage. While there is no antiviral drug to treat dengue, there is a vaccine, but it is not approved for use in U.S. travelers who are visiting but not living in an endemic area.
