In preparation for the general election, President Hurd moderates the discussion with political analysts Harold Ford Jr. and Michael Steele

In advance of the Nov. 5 general election, Lafayette College will host a bipartisan discussion between noted political analysts Harold Ford Jr. and Michael Steele on Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in Colton Chapel.

Free and open to the public, seating permitting. “Dialogue Across Difference: Countdown to Election 2024,” moderated by the President Nicole Hurdoffers the Lafayette community the opportunity to have a conversation with two experienced political commentators about the dynamics, implications and potential outcomes of this year’s election season.

“We are pleased to offer this program with Harold Ford Jr. and Michael Steele as we prepare to exercise our voice and voice in the lead-up to this very closely watched presidential election,” Hurd said. “I encourage students, faculty, staff and our neighbors in the community to attend and hear what these two seasoned political experts have to say about the election and the national response to it as November 5 approaches.”

Doors open at 4:15 p.m. and questions can be submitted in advance. The program is expected to last until 6 p.m. There will be refreshments afterwards. Register to watch the live broadcast.


About the guests

Harold Ford Jr.

Ford served in Congress from 1997 to 2007, representing Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District. Ford served on the House Financial Services, Budget and Education Committees during his time in Washington, DC. Considered a moderate Democrat willing to reach across the political aisle to find common ground, he has also been a member of both the Blue Dog coalitions and Congressional Black Caucus.

Ford is also an active member of Issue One, an organization of former senators, governors and congressmen committed to reforming our political and campaign systems. An investment banker, he is a co-host of the FOX News Channel The Fiveappears on MSNBC Morning Joe Show and regularly writes articles for Special report with Bret Baier.


Michael SteeleMichael Steele

Steele was the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee. A former lieutenant governor of Maryland, he is the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland. Most recently, he was President and CEO of The Steele Group, a consulting firm that works with institutional and individual clients to design overall business development, investor, networking and communications strategies.

Steele is a political analyst for MSNBC, a contributor to Fox News Channel and a regular host of the Salem Radio Network’s nationally broadcast shows Tomorrow in America show. He has also been a guest on political talk shows on cable television such as HBO Real Time with Bill MaherComedy Central daily show, And The Colbert Report.
