According to the United Nations, Israel fired on a peacekeeping post in southern Lebanon

U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon said Wednesday that Israeli forces fired on one of their positions in southern Lebanon, damaging a watchtower, in a “direct and apparently premeditated” attack.

Peacekeepers in the southern village of Kfar Kila observed an Israeli army tank “shooting at their watchtower,” UNIFIL said, adding that “two cameras were destroyed and the tower was damaged” in what police described as “direct and apparently deliberate fire.” a “designated UNIFIL position”.

Israel carried out dozens of attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Wednesday, killing a city mayor, collapsing buildings and causing widespread destruction in several southern areas.

In the latest clashes in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Israel has come under increasing international pressure following the breach of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon and the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Israeli army said its warplanes struck dozens of Hezbollah targets in the southern city of Nabatiyeh, where the Lebanese group and its ally Amal are in control.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said 16 people were killed and 52 injured in the attacks on two municipal buildings, adding that rescuers were searching for survivors.

The city’s mayor was among the dead, a local official told AFP, adding that the attacks “formed a kind of belt of fire.”

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the attack, saying Israel “deliberately targeted a local council meeting where the city’s services and relief situation were discussed.”

The United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon, Imran Riza, said the “devastating attack claimed the lives of even more civilians and local authorities working to provide assistance.”

Rescuers also searched the rubble for survivors in the southern Lebanese village of Qana, where Israeli attacks on Tuesday killed three people and injured 54, the Lebanese ministry said.
