U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon said Wednesday that Israeli forces fired on one of their positions in southern Lebanon, damaging a watchtower, in a “direct and apparently premeditated” attack.

Peacekeepers in the southern village of Kfar Kila observed an Israeli army tank “shooting at their guard tower.” AFP UNIFIL quoted in a statement.

“Two cameras were destroyed and the tower was damaged,” it said.

“Once again we see direct and apparently deliberate fire on a UNIFIL position. We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligation to ensure the security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times,” the statement said.

UNIFIL has reported several attacks on its troops and bases since Israel launched its ground invasion of southern Lebanon almost three weeks ago. Countries around the world have condemned the Israeli attacks, saying they could violate international law.

Five peacekeepers were wounded, most of them attributed to Israeli forces.

Benjamin Netanyahu denied that Israeli troops intentionally attacked UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon and called on them to leave the area while pursuing Hezbollah targets.
