On January 9, 2018, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call at a home in the 2100 block of 63rd Street in unincorporated Downers Grove.

When officers arrived, they found Kevin James covered in blood at the entrance to the home around 1:30 p.m

Inside, officers found his mother, Patricia, lying face down in the living room. She was unconscious and bleeding from multiple stab wounds.

She was taken to hospital where she died.

James, then 24, was taken into custody.

Investigators later discovered that James had suffocated and stabbed his mother multiple times with a kitchen knife.

James had been incarcerated in the DuPage County Jail since his mother’s murder.

The now 30-year-old pleaded guilty but was mentally ill to one count of first-degree murder.

On Tuesday, James was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

“It is my sincere hope that the family is afforded some measure of isolation,” DuPage County District Attorney Robert Berlin said. “I wish them strength for the rest of their lives, because the comforting memories of Patricia must now replace the love and support that she once gave.”
