What is a gill cyst? Serena Williams’ health scare

Serena Williams is enjoying life in retirement and regularly posts about her family and businesses on social media. But the 43-year-old just revealed she is recovering after having a cyst removed from her neck.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion said she first noticed something was wrong in May but only recently had it removed. Here’s what she shared about her experience and how she’s doing now.

How was Serena Williams’ health?

Serena was diagnosed with a branchial cyst. “In May, I discovered a lump on my neck,” she shared in the caption of an Oct. 15 TikTok that showed her in a hospital bed. “I immediately went to the doctor, had an MRI and was told I had an upper arm cyst.”

Serena said she was told she didn’t have to have it removed, so she didn’t. “But it continued to grow,” she added.

Three tests and a biopsy later, Serena was told she should consider having it removed immediately “because it was the size of a small grapefruit.”

“It could become infected or, worse, leak,” she shared. “So that’s my job, to remove it.”

What is a gill cyst?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a branchial cyst, also called a branchial cleft cyst, is a small, fluid-filled sac that looks like a lump under the skin on the side of your neck. They can occur at any age, but most often occur in children.

Branch cysts are not cancerous, but doctors may recommend surgery to remove them to reduce the risk of infection, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

How does Serena Williams feel?

Serena seems to be doing well now.

“I am so grateful and happy that everything worked out and most importantly, I am healthy,” she wrote. “I still made it to American Doll with Olympia as promised. And yes, everything is fine.”

Serena shared in the video that she was “suffering” during a trip to the American Girl Doll store with her daughter Olympia. (Serena shares daughters Olympia, 6, and Adira, 1, with husband Alexis Ohanian.)

“But Mom has to keep showing up,” she added.

Feel better, Serena!
