Plainfield, New York accident shutters roadway

On October 15, 2024, at approximately 9:20 a.m., New York State Police from Richfield Springs responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries on US-20 in the town of Plainfield.

The investigation revealed that a Ford Escape traveling east on US-20 crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the side of a semi-truck. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unable to avoid the Ford Escape, resulting in a sideways skid along the entire length of the tractor-trailer and trailer. The semi-truck then lost control and crashed into a power pole.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 56-year-old woman from Sherburne, NY, was ejected from the vehicle but remained conscious at the scene. She was transported by West Winfield Ambulance to Wynn Hospital in Utica with serious injuries. A cat in a carrier in the Ford Escape was taken to the SPCA in Cooperstown.

The 70-year-old male driver of the tractor-trailer from Westerlo, NY, was uninjured.

US-20 was closed due to low-hanging wires on the damaged utility pole and remains shut down with a detour.

The investigation is ongoing.
