At least one Milwaukee Walgreens is among about 500 stores closing nationwide next year.

The Walgreens at 2625 W. National Ave. is closing, according to a recorded message people receive when they call the store. on November 3rd.

The message states that people who fill their prescriptions locally can pick up their prescriptions at 1433 W. Burnham St. Walgreens, which is just over 1½ miles away. Customers are asked to speak to a pharmacy team member about the change.

Walgreens is closing 1,200 stores nationwide by 2027

On Tuesday, Walgreens announced plans to close about 1,200 stores over the next three years. The company also said it plans to close about 500 stores next year. The company operates approximately 8,700 retail pharmacies in the United States

This comes after Walgreens announced in June that it would close a “significant portion” of underperforming stores over the next three years. At that time, the company had not yet agreed on the final number of locations to close.

Walgreens operates more than 50 stores in Milwaukee and surrounding suburbs, according to the company’s online store locator. While it’s not immediately clear which 1,200 stores Walgreens plans to close, the move would affect about 13% of the chain’s U.S. stores.

The Journal Sentinel reached out to Walgreens to see if it expects to close additional locations in southeastern Wisconsin but has not received a response.

Three Walgreens locations in Milwaukee have closed in less than a year

In 2023, Walgreens closed two locations in Milwaukee, at West Hampton and North Fond du Lac avenues and at North Forest Home and West Lincoln avenues.

Then, in December, it was announced that the Walgreens location at West Capitol Drive and North Teutonia Avenue would be closing. The site closed 10 days earlier than expected on January 5, to the dismay of residents of the northern Garden Homes neighborhood.

Nationally, drugstore chains are struggling to keep up with competition from Amazon, and drug reimbursement rates from prescription-filling middlemen are also declining.

CVS has laid off thousands of corporate and other employees since 2023 while grappling with “ongoing disruptions, regulatory pressures and evolving customer needs,” a spokesperson previously told USA TODAY. Since filing for bankruptcy about a year ago, Rite Aid has closed hundreds of stores across the U.S. after years of struggling to keep up with its larger rivals.
