Google Flights now displays the “Cheapest” options

Ahead of the busy holiday travel season, Google Flights is introducing a new “Cheapest” search filter.

After entering where and when you’re traveling, Google Flights will soon show you “Best” and “Cheapest” tabs, with the former “based on a mix of price and convenience.”

This new Cheapest tab will show “more options at even cheaper prices” by taking into account what Google calls “creative itineraries.” Since the price is highlighted in green, it could be:

  • Longer stopovers: already noted by Google Flights
  • Self-transfers: “Generally, travelers must collect and recheck their luggage during layovers, check-in separately for each flight, and forego the benefits of inter-airline communication.” Also known as virtual interline.
  • Purchasing/splitting different parts of your trip across multiple airlines or third party booking sites that may also offer cheaper fares

At the bottom of each card, Google Flights continues to note notes such as “Separate tickets booked together.” If these are “Separate Tickets” or the new “Self Transfer”, a more prominent red warning message will be displayed.

The launch of Least begins this week and will be available “globally over the next two weeks.” It is intended for “the times when price is more important than comfort.”
