A road rage incident escalated into a shooting that sent one person to the hospital and another to jail Tuesday, according to Miami-Dade police.

Around 1:30 p.m., 29-year-old Javiel Polo and a 61-year-old woman were traveling east on Southwest 88th Street before a fight broke out near 137th Avenue, according to his arrest report.

According to police, Polo approached the victim’s black Dodge van on a motorcycle and pointed a gun at her during an argument. He put the gun back in the holster, but left his motorcycle in the middle of the road.

Both Polo and the victim exited their vehicles and continued to argue. The confrontation took a violent turn when Polo fired a single shot, striking the victim in the upper right leg, according to his arrest report.

Police responded to the scene, arrested Polo and recovered a firearm from his waistband. They also found a spent bullet casing and evidence that a bullet had struck another car. Witnesses and video footage confirmed that the victim, an elderly woman of short stature, was unarmed during the incident, the report said.

The victim was transported to HCA Hospital in stable condition. Polo was taken to the Hammocks District Station and later transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained Wednesday morning, according to jail records.

He invoked his right to remain silent and faces a charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, according to records.
