A 5-year-old English Springer Spaniel named Odin is recovering after being impaled through the chest by a 12-inch stick in a horrific accident in his backyard.

DoveLewis Veterinary Hospital says Odin was playing outside in his family’s backyard when they suddenly heard him scream in pain. As they rushed to his side, they made a horrifying discovery – a 12-inch-long stick buried in the dog’s chest.

Odin was taken to the emergency room at DoveLewis. Using x-rays, veterinarians quickly determined that the stick had not penetrated Odin’s chest cavity or internal organs; However, there were concerns about soft tissue injury, possible nerve damage and risk of infection.

Odin was prepared for emergency surgery and the team was able to remove the stick and ensure that no splinters or debris remained that could cause damage.

DoveLewis notes that the pup was particularly lucky because he didn’t need a thoracotomy or a limb amputation. Fluid drainage and some very strong antibiotics completed his care.

Odin is now back home and his family says he is recovering well.

According to DoveLewis, this incident highlights the importance of monitoring pets while playing and ensuring their environment is safe.
