Man convicted of stabbing his brother-in-law faces 20 years in prison

The Albany man who pleaded guilty to stabbing his brother-in-law to death in January is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday morning in an Albany County court.

In August, Ashley Heshmat, 45, of Albany, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Albany County Court. The plea also meets the indictment’s lesser charges: five counts of tampering with evidence and one count of concealing a human corpse.

He faces 20 years to life in state prison.

On January 14, 2024, Albany police found Bishop dead “with multiple lacerations to the head and neck area” at his Rose Court residence. According to police, Bishop and Heshmat shared the apartment.

Heshmat was arrested and made his first court appearance on January 24, 2024 on charges of murdering Bishop, a former employee of St. Peter’s Health Partners.
