Newsweek sent an email to reps for Drew and Shondaland, who produce Grey’s Anatomyfor comment on Wednesday outside of normal business hours.

“When the result was that we were fired from our family, I had to do a lot of interviews and walk red carpets because the web series I directed was nominated for an Emmy,” Drew explained.

“So three months after my release I was literally on the wrong foot Grey’s Anatomy.”

“It’s one of those weird moments in the industry,” Luddington joked, to which Drew agreed, before continuing: “But that’s what I wanted to do, I did a lot of interviews and everyone wanted to know, ‘How?’ did it feel?’ Whatever, and of course the one line that everyone picked up and that was plastered across all the headlines was, “Sarah compares being fired to attending her own funeral.”

While Luddington thought it was a “great quote,” Drew took the opportunity to explain what she meant by her comments.

“What I was trying to describe was like being unceremoniously let go in a way that felt really mean and unfair, and because of that the love was so enormous that it was like sitting there and watching,” people say everything they love about you, [it was like I was] dead,” she said.

When Luddington asked Capshaw and Drew if returning to the show as guest stars felt like “coming home,” Drew said, “Absolutely.” However, she clarified that she no longer has an “attachment” to the program.

“So there’s peace…when you’re on the show you never know what’s going to happen, you never know if they’re going to lose interest in the plot or if you’re going to piss off the wrong person, then something’s going to happen.” “It will happen. You never know,” she continued.

“But if I just come back to say hello, I’m no longer afraid and don’t need anything from anyone on set. They’re no longer responsible for my livelihood, they’re not responsible for my success or my happiness, it feels very, very liberating to check in again because I’m like, ‘Hey! This is a great place to visit!’”

In an August 2018 with The Hollywood ReporterDrew said that after learning she had been fired, she “went back to my trailer and I was crying and calling my people.”

She expanded her thoughts as she spoke to them vulture at the BAFTA pre-Emmys party in September of that year, where she said: “In a way you almost feel like you’re attending your own funeral. Strange. But in a really nice way.”

“I think the outcry of support from the fans, my cast, my crew when I was fired was so extraordinary. I’m talking about a love bomb. It’s like letting go before something ends and when it’s not your decision, people come up to you and tell you why they love you and how much they love you and what you meant to them.

Various publications took up these quotes and included them AND Publishing an article headlined “Sarah Drew Says Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Was Like ‘Attending My Own Funeral'” and Cosmopolitan Story Release: “Sarah Drew Says Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Was Like Attending Your Own Funeral.”
