Former MP convicted of sexual abuse of a child in another case

MENOMINEE, MI – A former Menominee County sheriff’s deputy already serving a prison sentence for criminal sexual conduct was sentenced last week to 40 to 60 months in prison in a separate case.

Brian Helfert, 61, was convicted in December of second-degree CSC with a weapon. He is currently serving a sentence of 9 to 15 years in prison on this charge.

He requested a jury trial in a case in which he was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy at Blesch Middle School in 2017. Helfert was a school resource officer at the time.

The trial was scheduled for late July, but Helfert agreed to a plea deal in which he pleaded no contest to one of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The other count was dropped.

Helfert’s sentences run parallel.
