The Santa Clara County school superintendent suddenly fired

(KRON) – Santa Clara County’s school superintendent was abruptly fired Thursday. The headmistress, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, was fired following a meeting of the Santa Clara County Board of Education on Wednesday.

During that meeting, the board voted to terminate her without cause.

“It has been a great honor and privilege to serve Santa Clara County, its schools, community, staff and students,” Dewan said in a statement. “I have dedicated my life to serving our community and greatly appreciate the work of the County Office of Education. I am incredibly proud of everything we have done together to advance equity, inclusion, diversity and partnership.”

According to her bio on the county Office of Education website, Dewan has worked in education for more than 33 years and holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Indiana State University.

The Santa Clara County Board of Education sent the following statement to KRON4:

“The Santa Clara County Board of Education process regarding the employment of Dr. Mary Ann Dewan is consistent with decades-long Board of Education practice regarding principal hiring decisions at the Santa Clara County Board of Education.

Dr. Dewan voluntarily signed her “District Supervisor Employment Agreement” on September 19, 2018. In dr. Dewan’s employment agreement clearly and expressly states that “the Board may terminate this agreement without cause upon thirty (30) days prior written notice to the District Manager.”

Given the nature of their consent and the provisions of California law regarding such decisions, the Board properly met in closed session during the October 2 Board meeting, as permitted by the Brown Act provisions of the Government Code.“
