Despite these allegations, Watson remains on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list and continues to play for the Browns.

Deshaun Watson’s settlement of a lawsuit against the Browns quarterback remains part of the NFL’s ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual assault and battery filed on September 10, 2024, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We are continuing our review as we would,” Goodell said Tuesday, via NFL.com. “As you know, we take the personal conduct policy seriously, so our employees work diligently.”
The NFL wants to interview plaintiff Tony Buzbee, who filed a lawsuit against former player Watson alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior during massage therapy sessions. Watson was suspended for 11 games in 2022 and fined $5 million. The latest lawsuit, filed Sept. 9, accuses Watson of sexually assaulting an unidentified woman in 2020 and seeks more than $1 million in damages. The league is attempting to interview the plaintiff through her attorney.
Watson, acquired from Houston in a controversial trade, has denied the allegations and settled nearly two dozen civil lawsuits. Although he struggled in Cleveland, the Browns gave him a $230 million guaranteed contract and a $230 million draft pick. Some fans are calling for Watson to be substituted for backup Jameis Winston.
