Suspect charged with murder of semi-truck driver

DELLE, Tooele COUNTY – Police have filed a criminal complaint against the person suspected of killing a semi-truck driver who they said was following the victim for at least 60 miles.

Jaswinder Singh Dhillon, 46, is charged with one count of criminal homicide, one count of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, according to charging documents.

On Sept. 26, Jaspinder Singh of California was found dead in the cab of a tractor-trailer parked on an Interstate 80 ramp in Delle. Singh was found by a colleague who was driving a separate truck. He noticed that Singh’s GPS wasn’t moving and decided to check on him.

According to a probable cause statement, investigators obtained video surveillance footage from a gas station in Delle as well as dashboard camera footage from Singh’s co-worker’s semi-truck. Investigators used both sources of footage to confirm timestamps because the gas station footage “did not correspond to the corresponding Mountain Daylight Time.”

Officials said that around 3:29 a.m. on Sept. 26, video footage showed the tractor-trailer pulling into the truck parking lot west of the gas station. About 30 seconds later, a light-colored Mercedes sedan can be seen “driving very slowly and stopping at times.” Charging documents state that the Mercedes is observed on dashcam footage following the semi-truck at low speed on the exit ramp.

Agents noted that the Mercedes was also captured on footage following the semi-truck using license plate reader information at approximately 2:31 a.m. at the Utah port of entry near Wendover, UT. Singh’s semi was reportedly filmed at the Wendover location at 2:31 a.m., about 30 seconds before the Mercedes was seen.

Documents show the speed limit on Interstate 80 in that area is about 80 mph, and officers were told the victim and his colleague’s tractor-trailers were traveling at about 72 mph. “This information indicates that the Mercedes remained behind or near the tractor-trailer for a distance of over 60 miles in Utah alone,” the documents state.

The two vehicles were noted on the license plate reader near Reno, Nevada. The semi-final was recorded at 6:33 p.m., the Mercedes at 6:34 p.m

Agents reportedly found a receipt in Singh’s semi-truck indicating he had purchased fuel at a gas station in Wells, Nevada. While watching the surveillance camera footage, Singh is seen entering the supermarket. The same Mercedes seen in earlier footage pulled into the gas station about a minute after the semi.

No one got out of the Mercedes while it was parked at the gas pumps, but the car “moved forward a short time later to what appeared to be the front of the store, just outside the view of the camera.” You then see a “hooded figure” running from the area where the Mercedes was parked to the front of the store.

Agents also reviewed surveillance camera footage they obtained from a gas station in Winnemucca, Nevada. Footage showed Singh, the victim, entering the gas station. The Mercedes is seen pulling into the same gas station, then a person pumps gas, then gets out of the car and goes into the gas station. As the semi-trailer leaves the gas station, the Mercedes follows.

Charging documents show that on October 10th and 11th, investigators obtained photos of the Mercedes with Washington license plates and the driver of the vehicle. The Mercedes was registered to Jaswinder Dhillon. Investigators say Dhillon’s employer, Uber, confirmed that it was the suspect’s car. According to investigators, the image provided by Uber also closely resembles photos taken on October 10 and 11, as well as security footage from the gas station in Winnemucca, Nevada.
