Trump’s strangest rally yet leaves ‘Daily Show’ stunned

“Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic was stunned this week by Donald Trump’s bizarre town hall, in which he forgoed the event’s question-and-answer format and simply played music.

Lydic filmed footage of the former president dancing, swaying and pantomiming some of the song’s lyrics for about 40 minutes at the event in Pennsylvania.

“I literally have no idea what just happened,” she said Tuesday night. “I don’t know if he’s taking edibles or if I’m taking edibles.”

Lydic pointed out the blatant hypocrisy of how Trump is being covered for Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I love how everyone always criticizes Kamala for not concretely implementing her policies,” she said. “Meanwhile, Trump says, ‘Shh, shh, shh, no questions, no talking, we’re just going to swing for a while.’

At some point, Trump called for “Ave Maria.” When he got the instrumental version, he let the song play, but then asked for it again – this time with vocals from Luciano Pavarotti.

“Why does Trump know so much about ‘Ave Maria,’ was it used in a McDonald’s commercial?” Lydic asked. “Man, he really loves that song. Who’s going to tell him it’s about a virgin?”

She also felt a little sympathy for “puppy shooter” Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, who was on stage with Trump when it all unfolded.

“That’s the best thing I’ve ever said about her,” she said. “Because we’ve all been in a situation where a guy is explaining his Spotify playlist to you.”

Noem tried to get the event back on track with more questions. Trump briefly considered the idea, but then decided to play more music instead.

“It’s probably a good idea to quell the questions because I’m pretty sure the next question would have been, ‘Um, hello sir, what the hell is going on here?'” Lydic said.
