Welcome to the third season of the HOWL podcast from NCPR and the Adirondack Center for Writing!

As in every season of the HOWL podcastthis time you’ll hear great stories recorded live on stages across the North Country. But we have added an interesting twist for Season 3. We invited a few special guests to tell their stories at the NCPR studios, and without time limit.

We kick things off with local poet Jim Bourey (the lower case is intended), who tells us how he went from working in the Air Force to working at a bank to running a music store and finally managing an adult drive-in movie theater the 80s. It’s exactly what it sounds like: porn movies on a big screen outside in a residential neighborhood.

Jim’s story is about a different time in America, when adult films were entering the mainstream and pornographic material represented a fight for First Amendment rights. As he tells it, it took a large cast of bizarre characters to keep the shows running seven days a week – including Greasy Lester, the projectionist, and two chain-smoking women – both named Virginia – who helped run the fully featured To operate the kitchen and snack bar.

Host Ethan Shantie also shares his own stories about running a movie theater — including the time he had to call 911 after a drunk patron hit his head on the bathroom wall.

It’s a wild episode of the HOWL podcast and we know you will love it.

Be sure to follow the show so you don’t miss an episode. And while you’re at it, why not throw a few dollars into the hat to help? the howling? As we launch Season 3, we also just launched NCPR’s annual Fall Fundraiser, the time of year when we remind you that shows like this are made possible by the support of the community. Without your donations, we wouldn’t be able to bring you great stories, award-winning news or unique music programming. So don’t wait – give now. And thank you.

See you next week for a story about how things found in the closet can change lives.
