Grey’s Anatomy alum Sarah Drew remembers her firing feeling “mean and unfair.”

Sarah Drew Is Reflecting on the time she was released from Grey’s Anatomy after being on the show for nine seasons.

Drew played Dr. April Kepner and left the ABC drama series after Season 14 when her option opposite Jessica Capshaw was not accepted.

During an appearance on the Call it like it is On the podcast, co-hosted by Drew’s former co-stars Capshaw and Camilla Luddington, Drew explained how she felt about leaving the show.

“[I] was summarily dismissed in a way that felt mean and unfair, and because of that the love was so powerful that it was like sitting there and people watching [eulogize you]Drew said.

She gave an interview vulture following her exit in 2018, in which she compared being excluded from the show to “participation.” [my] own funeral.”

After Deadline broke the news that Drew and Capshaw would be leaving the medical drama, Drew took to social media to reach out to her fans.

“I know you’re sad. I’m sad too,” Drew wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I didn’t really have the time to process this information. Since I’ve only been here for less than 48 hours, I’m not yet ready to say thank you or make a full statement about my nine years here.”

Drew has since returned Grey’s Anatomy She reprises her role as April and says returning is “liberating,” adding: “I have no attachment to it [the show] at all. … I wasn’t afraid [going back because] I don’t need anything from anyone on set anymore. You are no longer responsible for my livelihood. They are not responsible for my success or my happiness… I say, “Hey! It’s fun to visit this place.’”

In the same interview, Drew revealed that her character was originally supposed to have a one-night stand with Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan.

“Before they made my character love Jesus and a virgin, there was a scene where Sloan and Reed [Nora Zehetner] Having sex, a random one night stand. That was originally supposed to be me. It was supposed to be April,” Drew remembers. “April was supposed to have some kind of one-off with Sloan, and that was in the original production draft [of the script]and then they changed it. I had nothing to do with it, but then they changed their mind.”
