Two adults were found dead after the Hampden fire spread to multiple units

BALTIMORE – Two adults were found dead early Tuesday morning after a five-alarm fire in the Hampden neighborhood displaced several families, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Just after 5:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 3400 block of Keswick Road. Upon arrival, firefighters saw the fire emanating from the roof of the complex and affecting several townhouses.

The fire spread quickly and damaged at least eight units.

“We believe it started in the middle of the units,” said Baltimore Fire Department spokesman John Marsh. “When we arrived there was a fire burning in three units with flames on both floors.”

One person was treated for minor injuries after being taken to a hospital. Another family reported that two of their family members were missing. According to Baltimore City Police, the two were found dead after an hours-long search.

“You looked up and the whole sky was red,” said Cara Bates, confused by the fire. “It was crazy.”

Meanwhile, displaced families are receiving help from their neighbors.

Another fire victim, who did not want to be identified, said she woke up Tuesday to the sound of her smoke alarm going off. She said one of her neighbors was hosting several people who were working to get on their feet.

Other neighbors are already talking about ways to lend a hand after the flames. The Red Cross also supports victims.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of two of our residents in this morning’s fire, and we grieve with their family, loved ones and neighbors,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott. “The City of Baltimore will stand with these families and provide every possible support to those who lost loved ones or property in this devastating fire.”
