Hooper Bay man charged with brutal stabbing of two teenagers

HOOPER BAY, Alaska (KTUU) – A Bethel grand jury on Tuesday indicted 20-year-old Shaquille Carawan in connection with the deaths of two teenage women earlier this month.

Novely Rivers and Abigail Olson, both 18, were stabbed to death in Hooper Bay in early October.

Court documents show Carawan faces two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder and three counts of tampering with physical evidence.

According to prosecutors, Rivers and Olson were both stabbed in Hooper Bay, with their injuries including more than 60 cuts and stab wounds.

Court documents also show that Carawan, who officials confirmed was Rivers’ cousin, confessed to killing both teens.

Carawan is scheduled to be arraigned in Bethel Superior Court on Wednesday.
