My analysis

Following an impressive Copa America debut, Canada played two friendlies against the USA and Mexico, which produced some positive results.

A 2-1 away win in the USA is a great result in a game where they dominated possession, shots on goal and xGF. The defense held firm – always a big question mark for a team that failed to keep its opponents out in the crucial phase of the Copa America tournament.

Canada followed that win with a dismal 0-0 draw at home to Mexico. This was a game that was always going to test Canada’s defensive efforts and they passed the test as El Tri only recorded three shots on goal.

Given Canada’s current form, I believe the defense will shine again tonight against a Panama team that hasn’t scored many goals recently. Panama enters this competition with two straight losses to nil, including a 2-0 loss to the same U.S. team that beat the Canadians.

Canada will be expected to field a strong starting XI in front of their home crowd and I don’t think Panama will be able to crack the Canadian defense. Historically, these two teams have scored fewer than 2.5 goals in seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings.
