Suspect was killed by officer-involved gunfire at the end of the chase

A suspect involved in a car chase is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Texas, and a police officer suffered a minor leg injury, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The chase began just after 9 a.m. Tuesday when a suspect fled following a disturbance in Bridge City.

The chase made its way onto Highway 73, where a Chambers County District 6 deputy constable was struck while riding a motorcycle and participating in a heavy equipment convoy. According to authorities, he suffered a broken leg and required surgery.

Detective Havard told KFDM that the chase continued to Green Avenue near 15th Street, where it ended when the truck came to a stop and the suspect got out, with officers firing several shots. The suspect was killed and a police officer suffered a leg injury, probably from a ricocheting bullet.

It all happened near a school, West Orange Stark Middle School. The administration ensured that students and staff sheltered on site until the scene of the accident was deemed safe.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating along with OCSO.

Victor Morales was in his truck near the area and recorded video of the officer-involved shooting.

Morales’ video shows a school bus driving past the intersection, and a few seconds later officers encounter the suspect lying face down on a grassy area near the sidewalk on the other side of the fence at the school. He looks up and several officers open fire, firing several shots. The suspect died at the scene.

KFDM is investigating whether the suspect had a weapon and whether he made threats to officers.
