Spooky drums take center stage at the Paranormal Percussion show

SALT LAKE CITY – Drummers take the spotlight in this unique Halloween performance. Paranormal Percussion is a local Halloween show that features only drums and percussion.

“I realized that people in Utah really love Halloween and people love drumming, so we kind of put the two together,” said show founder Matt Nickle.

Paranormal Percussion is performed by Warehouse 5 Drum Theater. Nickles says the show is the perfect combination of spooky and family-friendly. “Every year I think of new arrangements for things,” Nickle said. “I like to play the Ghostbusters theme, the Thriller theme. The funniest thing is to play on instruments that are a little unconventional, like a coffin or a car.”

“It’s really just about us drummers who have been drumming our whole lives coming out here, banging some drums and having a good time together,” said Paranormal Percussions performer Derek Julio.

Since the show began in 2019, people have traveled from all over the state to see their favorite Halloween songs come to life on stage. Nickles and Julio say the audience feedback has been scary so far.

“It just feels wonderful when we know they had a really good time, a really good experience,” Julio said. “It’s supposed to be scary, it’s supposed to be a little bit fun, I think it’s really funny in a lot of ways,” Julio said.

Warehouse 5 Drum Theater hopes to continue making audiences smile and shine a spotlight on drummers by eventually hosting more seasonal shows.

“It’s really fulfilling for me. The first year was really scary because I had these arrangements but I didn’t know if they would make sense live, but once we got the show together it was really nice,” Nickles said.
