Auburn student dies from injuries sustained in bicycle accident

An Auburn student has died as a result of injuries she sustained in a bicycle accident in the city in late September.

In a letter to the community, Dr. Misty Slavic, superintendent of the Auburn Enlarged City School District, announced that high school student Mercedes Falcone passed away on Monday.

Her injuries occurred in an accident on Sept. 28, Slavic said.

Slavic noted that Auburn High School has a crisis team of counselors, social workers, psychologists and other professionals trained to meet the needs of students, parents, caregivers and staff.

She also encouraged any parents seeking help supporting their children at home to contact their school.

“The death of a student in our school community is heartbreaking and can cause a high level of anxiety and distress for some students,” Slavic said. “If you feel that your child needs to speak with a counselor or other member of the school crisis team, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school to let them know.”
