Sphere Abu Dhabi: Famous entertainment venue Las Vegas is coming to the UAE

Sphere, the spectacular Las Vegas entertainment venue, is coming to Abu Dhabi.

The UAE version retains many features of the original, including the shape for which it is named, as well as exterior and interior surfaces made from LED screen technology, allowing for impressive visual displays.

The heritage-listed 20,000-seat venue, known for its wraparound 16K indoor LED screen, opened in September last year and has hosted impressive shows from artists including U2 and the Eagles.

An opening date and location for Sphere Abu Dhabi has yet to be announced, but it will be designed to host a variety of events, including concerts and storytelling sessions, while retaining its groundbreaking visual and lighting elements, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to host – Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment.

“Sphere Abu Dhabi will seamlessly combine advanced technology with captivating storytelling, creating unforgettable memories for every visitor,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi. “This partnership is in line with our Tourism Strategy 2030 and further establishes Abu Dhabi as a vibrant center for culture and innovation. By introducing cutting-edge entertainment like Sphere, we are not only raising our global profile, but also setting new standards for immersive experiences and cultural offerings.”

James L. Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, called the group’s first international expansion a “milestone.” He added: “Sphere’s vision has always included a global network of venues. Sphere is redefining live entertainment and expanding the reach of its transformative impact. We are proud to work with DCT Abu Dhabi.”

Sphere is located right on the famous Vegas Strip, near the Venetian Resort. It reportedly cost $2.3 billion to build, making it the city’s most expensive venue.

The announcement comes as Abu Dhabi prepares to host one of the region’s biggest concerts: Coldplay will perform in front of 120,000 fans at four shows at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in January.

Meanwhile, Sphere in Las Vegas has a busy calendar of events through April with electronic music show Anyma and screenings of the U2 concert film V-U2plus daily tours of the venue.
