Delta crew falls ill over listeria concerns, hot meals stopped on Detroit flights – Panera bread takes over on board

Delta is no longer serving hot meals in Detroit. Aviation Guardian JonNYC confirmed what I expected, that it was listeria.

While Delta downplays the significance, it suggests a “food safety issue” has been discovered during an inspectionThe crew of a flight from Detroit to Amsterdam reportedly fell ill, suggesting the airline’s statement, even if technically correct, is misleading.

Meanwhile, Delta is Catering from other cities (for example double catering flights to Detroit and using the second half for the return flight) and Room temperature catering items instead of hot meals. There’s some Panera on board here, which is probably an improvement over many of Delta’s domestic first-class meals.

In 2019, Air France Economy and Premium Economy tuna sandwiches made passengers sick thanks to listeria.

Two years earlier, American Airlines and others were without catering at LAX when listeria was discovered at a gate gourmet facility. In this case, listeria was not found on food contact surfaces, only in floor drains, and no one reported being sick.

Still, food service was limited as other caterers such as Flying Food Group worked to pick up some of the shortfall. It took a month to eliminate and verify the listeria, and a month later Gate Gourmet returned to serving the majority of its customers.

United Airlines facilities have also been affected by listeria in the past.
