Mark Taylor locked his wife in the house after the attack

A man who repeatedly stabbed his wife before locking her in the house and running away with their teenage son has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Mark Taylor’s “savage” attack on Suzanne Taylor at her home in Baslow, Derbyshire, on February 15 was so serious that the knife he was using broke before he picked up a second knife and continued stabbing her.

Derbyshire Police said Taylor then asked his victim – who suffered multiple wounds in the attack – to hand over her phone and said he would call an ambulance.

But instead Taylor, who was jailed Monday for attempted murder, said “this will be the end of you” before locking the doors and driving away.

Derby Crown Court previously heard there had been an argument between the couple over how they cared for their son.

According to police, the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of stab wounds to his neck, arm, chest and abdomen.

Taylor, 57, of Wheatlands Lane, was convicted After a trial at Derby Crown Court he was sentenced to 23 years in prison with an additional five years for dangerousness, police added.

Disclosure of domestic violence

Police said that after the attack, Ms Taylor tried to call for help through the letterbox and managed to crawl up the stairs and call for help, eventually attracting the attention of a dog handler who called emergency services.

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras captured Taylor’s car across the county before driving into Cheshire, where he was stopped and arrested later that day.

During the sentencing, Taylor was also handed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting his wife and son.

Interim police detective Amber Holmes said: “This was a violent and sustained attack by Taylor on his wife, who was genuinely afraid she was going to die.”

“Following this incident, she told police that she had been subjected to domestic violence from her husband for around 40 years, including a previous incident involving a knife.”

“It is clear from Taylor’s history and actions that day that he posed a very real threat to his wife.

“I am therefore pleased that the judge recognized the danger Taylor poses with this extended sentence.”
