Commission says disinformation efforts failed to influence EU election – POLITICO

She will present the results of her so-called democracy tour last spring, during which she visited a dozen EU countries to raise awareness of election manipulation by rogues and met with officials, regulators and experts: “I felt the pressure to ring the bell “To protect the bells of election integrity and protect it from manipulation and interference by Putin and others.”

At the start of this big election year, there were fears that artificial intelligence – more specifically, highly manipulative deepfakes – could destabilize the process.

These concerns have not materialized and the technology has not been used “on a large scale,” the EU analysis says, although there have been unlabeled uses of AI-generated content by parties in some cases, for example by the National Rally in France and the league in Italy.

“We have, as you know, predicted more problems this year than ever before,” said Elsa Pilichowski, director of public governance at the OECD, confirming that AI had not been a “game changer” in the electoral process.

Europe escaped the bullet this year, but that doesn’t mean it will have the same luck next time.

Pilichowski warned that governments are currently not prepared to deal with the risk of ballot hijacking by generative AI. Officials “are discussing policy options. They are in the process of preparing. But I don’t think we are ready for the risks ahead,” she said.
