Canada accuses India of criminal activity amid ongoing diplomatic tensions

In a major escalation of diplomatic tensions, Canada has made new allegations against the Indian government, claiming it was directly involved in “serious criminal activities” on Canadian soil. These allegations come at a time when relations between the two nations are already strained following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan supporter, in Canada last year.

Claims without evidence

During a press conference late Monday evening, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) claimed that its investigation into Nijjar’s murder and other related cases had uncovered links linking Indian government agents to various “murders and violence” in Canada. What’s notable is that while the allegations have been made public, Ottawa has not yet provided any substantive evidence to support these claims.

The RCMP indicated that Indian agents in Canada are allegedly working with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which has been involved in several violent crimes, including the recent murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique in Mumbai. Bishnoi is currently imprisoned in Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat.

Specific goals and compulsion

The RCMP statement also alleged that Indian government agents coerced individuals and companies both in Canada and abroad to collect intelligence targeting members of the South Asian community, particularly pro-Khalistani elements. Brigitte Gauvin, assistant commissioner of the RCMP, noted that while the South Asian community as a whole has been affected, these groups are particularly focused on pro-Khalistani individuals.

Historical context and India’s response

The allegations come amid longstanding accusations from New Delhi that Ottawa has been a safe haven for Khalistani terrorists, particularly those involved in the infamous bombing of Air India Flight 182, which killed 329 people. Indian officials have frequently criticized Canada’s immigration policies, suggesting they allow people with ties to organized crime to enter the country.

In response to Canada’s allegations, India’s Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement claiming that Canada had not provided any evidence to support its claims. The statement accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of engaging in vote bank politics and neglecting the issue of separatist activity on Canadian soil.

Diplomatic fallout

As tensions escalated, New Delhi recalled its top envoy from Ottawa and expelled six Canadian diplomats in retaliation. This move indicates a deterioration in diplomatic relations as both nations remain in their respective positions.

The current situation highlights a complex web of allegations and diplomatic conflicts between Canada and India. With Canada alleging criminal activity and India vehemently denying these allegations, the need for dialogue and resolution becomes ever more urgent. The lack of evidence to support the allegations only complicates matters and leaves the future of Canada-India relations uncertain.
