CCTV footage reveals bizarre twist in an Erebus engineer’s ‘attack report’

CCTV footage has emerged of the alleged attack on an Erebus engineer at the Bathurst 1000, suggesting that only a single person was involved in the incident.

The team that won the race with Brodie Kostecki and co-driver Todd Hazelwood made headlines about the incident. Details were revealed by the reigning series champion on the Seven Network breakfast show Sunrise on Monday.

“One of our crew members was unfortunately attacked last night. “It’s really disappointing and really spoiled the evening,” Kostecki said.

“We wish Sam all the best and hope he recovers quickly together with his partner Tameika.”

The engineer who suffered the alleged attack was hospitalized; three men are said to have been the attackers.

But CCTV footage shown in a Seven News Central West bulletin showed a very different story: a young man hit himself rather than suffer an attack.

The report explained that a man walked along, hitting himself in the face before falling to the ground, while a woman followed in his footsteps.

Police have confirmed that the man has left hospital and that police believe no attack took place while inquiries are ongoing.

The incident is the latest in a turbulent year for the Erebus team, which has seen Kostecki miss the start of the campaign due to behind-the-scenes drama.

But he had won the Great Race with Hazelwood, giving the team their first triumph in the event since 2017, when David Reynolds and Luke Youlden came out on top.
