Rick Astley joined Manchester rock band Blossoms to create a soft rock version of Charli XCX’s hit pop song ‘360’. The musicians recorded the cover in the BBC’s Radio 1 Live Lounge, which complemented the scene with a bright green video screen in the background.

In the clip, Blossoms singer Tom Ogden does most of the song’s vocals, but Astley later steps in for a verse and gives it a sense of real swagger with an interpolation of Stardust’s 1998 song “Music Sounds Better With You.”

“We loved the record,” Ogden explained of the band’s choice of covers for the BBC session. “Of course everyone knows it’s been a brat summer, right? We love it as much as anyone and I think this song is just a great pop record.”

On trend

Earlier this year, Astley showed his penchant for modern pop by performing a surprisingly poignant cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s hit Drivers License for BBC Radio 2’s Piano Room. Performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra and two backing singers, Astley also performed his own 1987 mega-hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” which he and the orchestra mixed with Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You.”

Astley and Blossoms had previously teamed up for two concerts covering The Smiths, who Johnny Marr famously described as “both funny and terrible at the same time”. Astley and the band later performed a series of Smiths covers for a secret set at Glastonbury in 2023.
