Shots were fired at Virginia State University and the campus was locked down

According to university police, Virginia State University was placed on lockdown Monday evening after shots were fired near Moore Hall.

In an emergency alert posted on social media, VSU police confirmed the shooting and advised students and staff to stay indoors and secure their surroundings.

Authorities have not released any information about injuries or suspects and it remains unclear what led to the shooting.

The campus community was asked to follow all safety protocols while police continued their investigation. The lockdown was lifted about an hour after the initial announcement.

Students and alumni celebrated their homecoming last week. The festivities concluded Saturday with a parade, tailgate and football game against Bowie State University.
