Eby: The Indian government’s alleged involvement in criminal activity has no place in British Columbia or Canada

PREMIER David Eby said Monday that the Indian government’s alleged involvement in murders, extortion and other criminal violence in Canada “has no place in our province or our country.”

Eby said in a statement: “The allegations released today by the RCMP are shocking. We’ve all heard concerns from people about extortion and threats, and police in British Columbia have been part of a national task force trying to stop them. I am deeply disturbed by the new information we are learning. This is not just foreign interference; These are allegations of direct involvement of the Indian government in murders, extortions and other criminal violence in Canada – and they have no place in our province or our country. I am focused on protecting British Columbians and keeping people safe.

“I spoke this morning with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc. I have asked for their assurance that federal authorities will continue to work with local law enforcement to address these threats and keep the people of British Columbia safe. We will continue to ensure the RCMP has everything it needs to respond to this violent criminal and gang activity in our communities.

“BC’s strength is that we are a welcoming and inclusive place where anyone who works hard and follows the law can build a good life. Everyone who calls this place home deserves to be protected from threats, coercion and violence. We will stay together and support each other and resist any attempts to divide us.”
