Selena Gomez cries as Miranda Hart praises her health journey

A compliment can go a long way, even if it’s given to an award-winning, multi-hyphenate like Selena Gomez.

Gomez was moved to tears last week when she appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside British comedian and author Miranda Hart. During the interview, Hart credited the 2022 documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me” with encouraging her to publicly address her own health issues in her new book, “I Haven’t Been’t Entirely Honest with You.” .

“It’s extraordinary that I’m on the show with Selena. It makes me pretty emotional,” Hart said. “When I saw your documentary on Apple about your struggles with illness, I thought, ‘Should I share something?’ You know, is this something I should do?’ Because it feels pretty vulnerable.”

She further noted, “I watched your documentary and I was like, ‘Absolutely yes.’ And that’s what got me writing.”

“I Haven’t Been’t Completely Honest With You,” released last week, recounts Hart’s decades-long experience with Lyme disease, which her doctors said she contracted as a teenager.

As for “My Mind and Me,” the 2022 documentary takes an in-depth look at Gomez’s life after her diagnosis with lupus and bipolar disorder. The film is directed by Alek Keshishian, known to legions of music fans for capturing Madonna at the height of her groundbreaking fame in the 1991 documentary Truth or Dare.

On “The Graham Norton Show,” Hart was quick to clarify that her work as a comedian in film, television and music was different than Gomez’s. Still, she felt a connection to the “Only Murders in the Building” actor because they both knew “what a chronic illness is like.”

“I think she’s incredible,” Hart said.

Despite her tearful appearance on British television, Gomez is enjoying widespread acclaim for her performance in “Emilia Pérez,” a musical crime comedy that critics have hailed as an awards season front-runner. In the film, she portrays Jessi Del Monte, the grieving wife of a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón), who, unbeknownst to Gomez’s character, has faked her own death in order to truly live as a transgender woman.
