SHELBY TOWNSHIP – Neighbors United is raising funds for firefighters battling cancer with its Walk for the Red Charity Craft Show next month at the Disabled American Veterans Hall at 47326 Dequindre Road in Shelby Township.

Crafts and more will be on sale to benefit firefighters on November 23rd from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Just in time for Christmas, 40 artisans will offer their crafts for sale. Door donations go directly to Neighbors United-Walk for the Red.

Kathy Grenier said she and her daughter Michelle wanted to do something to raise funds, so they chose this craft fair.

“The Disabled American Veteran Hall gave us a deal for rent so we could actually raise money. It was very kind of them. All but four tables will be rented to artisans for the show. “We are happy to help in any way we can for this worthy cause,” she said.

Joe Warne, president of Neighbors United, said they believe the event is a good opportunity to try a different way of fundraising.

“We always encourage our followers and volunteers to raise funds for us themselves. Having Kathy and Michelle do this takes a lot of pressure off of us and allows our team to work in other areas to support our Michigan firefighters battling cancer,” he said.

He said firefighters are 9% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than any other profession, and every year the number of firefighters needing help is increasing.

“This year, over $330,000 will be donated to 75 firefighters from across the state,” he said.

The nonprofit Neighbors United’s largest fundraiser is #walkforthe RED, an annual walk across the state that Warne, a Macomb Township firefighter, has been doing for six years. For more information about Neighbors United, visit walkforthered.com or facebook.com/neighborsunitedmi.
