France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen is on trial for embezzling EU funds

Paris – French far-right leader Marine Le Pen will answer questions from judges in a Paris court on Monday as she and her Rassemblement National party go on trial over alleged embezzlement of European Parliament funds. She has denied any wrongdoing.

The nine-week trial is a critical moment for Le Pen, who is expected to be a strong candidate in France’s next presidential election in 2027. A guilty verdict could significantly impact her political career and ambitions.

The National Rally and 25 of its top officials went on trial last month for using money intended for EU parliamentary assistants instead to pay staff who worked for the party between 2004 and 2016, in breach of the rules 27-nation bloc had violated. The National Rally was then called Front National.

Starting Monday, Le Pen is scheduled to answer questions from the court on three consecutive days about the use of EU funds to pay her bodyguard, her chief of staff and two other party staffers.

When the trial opened last month, she promised to present “substantial arguments” showing that she and other party officials “did not violate any political and regulatory rules of the European Parliament.”

If found guilty, Le Pen and her co-defendants face up to ten years in prison and fines of up to one million euros each. Additional penalties could also be imposed, such as the loss of civil rights or the ban from running for office – a scenario that could hamper Le Pen’s goal of running for the presidency again after President Emmanuel Macron’s term ends could even destroy. Le Pen came second to Macron in the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections.

Two other Rassemblement Nationale officials, including the party’s historic leader, Le Pen’s father Jean-Marie, faced similar allegations but were exempt from prosecution for health reasons.

The trial is scheduled to last until November 27th.
