Next NFL coach fired? A trio of favorites is created The mighty 790 KFGO

The proverbial first shoe dropped on the NFL head coaching carousel when the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh last week.

After Week 6 saw more lackluster – and some glaring – defeats by other extremely disappointing teams, the spots have become hotter under several other coaches.

The leading “candidate” to be the next coach fired is Jacksonville’s Doug Pederson, who is the favorite at -140 odds, according to SportsBetting.ag. The Jaguars, picked by many analysts as AFC contenders before the season, fell to 1-5 after a 19-point loss to the Bears on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

The book offers chances for 17 candidates, although it is a small group that faces potential bad decisions in the near future.

Pederson said Monday that he doesn’t believe a coaching change is necessary for Jacksonville to turn its season around. He probably has another week to prove to owner Shad Khan that the Jaguars are staying in London before next weekend’s game against the New England Patriots (1-5). Khan gave Pederson a vote of confidence last week – before the 35-16 loss to the Bears.

The Jaguars are already on the verge of being eliminated from the AFC playoffs, and the road won’t get any easier if they return to the United States. They play the Green Bay Packers (4-2) on October 27th, Philadelphia (currently 3-2) in a primetime game on November 3rd, Minnesota (5-0) on November 10th and the Detroit Lions (4-1) on Nov. 17 before Jacksonville’s bye in Week 12. On the other side is the AFC South, which leads Houston (5-1) on Dec. 1.

Will Jerry stay the course?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones insisted he is not considering a coaching change after Dallas was embarrassed 47-9 at home by Detroit on Sunday – his 82nd birthday.

“I don’t think about that. Just so you’re clear, I’m not thinking about that,” Jones said Sunday night.

At 3-3 entering the bye week, the Cowboys are winless at home and 3-0 on the road and are in third place in the NFC East behind the Washington Commanders (4-2) and Philadelphia Eagles (3-2 ). Eleven NFC teams have three or more wins, but Dallas has allowed 168 points, a point differential of minus-42. That’s 15th out of 16 teams in the conference and better than just the 1-5 Carolina Panthers (203 points allowed).

The Cowboys expect injured All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons (ankle) and Pro Bowl cornerback DaRon Bland (foot) to return from their bye, while defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) is off injured reserve recovered.

CLEVELAND RIDDLES

Cleveland, like Jacksonville, was a popular preseason pick to give Kansas City and Buffalo a serious push into the AFC. Thanks to last season’s strong defense and offseason additions that included wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, expectations were sky high.

However, the Browns are also now 1-5 after losing their fourth straight game on Sunday. Cleveland has a minus-46 point lead and there are calls to bench quarterback Deshaun Watson and his guaranteed $230 million contract.

Stefanski is also on the hot seat just four months after signing a contract extension and eight months after his second NFL Coach of the Year award.

Cleveland has a chance to right its ship with three straight home games coming up. It begins Sunday with the Browns opening their AFC North slate against Cincinnati (2-4) and with the expectation that running back Nick Chubb will return to the lineup.

“The chance is there, the opportunity is there,” Watson said Sunday. “We just have to take it one week at a time and try to find a different way.”
