Port Authority police officer stabbed and slashed by suspected car thief on George Washington Bridge

A Bronx man is behind bars in New Jersey on Monday after he allegedly stabbed a Port Authority police officer multiple times while trying to steal his patrol vehicle on the George Washington Bridge on Sunday.

Uvaldo Gonzalez, 42, of the Bronx, was arrested on the George Washington Bridge the morning of Oct. 13 after he allegedly stabbed Port Authority Police Officer Miguel Correa up to nine times as he attempted to drive his patrol car to steal.

Gonzalez was charged by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office with attempted murder, aggravated assault, auto theft, resisting arrest and possession of weapons and drug paraphernalia.

Multiple media outlets reported that Gonzalez first stole a car in the Bronx and then crashed it in South Hackensack. He then allegedly stole another car and fled the scene before abandoning it on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge and attempting to steal more vehicles.

According to police, Gonzalez, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, allegedly opened the passenger door of Correa’s patrol car, got in, locked it and attempted to put it in gear and flee the scene. When Correa tried to prevent this, Gonzalez allegedly stabbed the officer six to seven times in the upper body and twice in the face.

After eventually being subdued by three police officers, Gonzalez allegedly continued to resist arrest. Law enforcement sources said he repeatedly punched and kicked Correa and two Port Authority police officers, Vincent Laconti and Joseph Romano, as they tried to handcuff him.

The three officers were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries. All have since been released.

Gonzalez remains in custody in Bergen County; He has not yet received a court date.
