RCMP shares intelligence on criminal activity linked to Indian government

The RCMP says it has found evidence linking the Indian government to killings and violence across Canada.

They shared some of their findings Monday after investigating allegations that criminal activity was being orchestrated by government agents. This all stems from the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia last June.

Their investigations found evidence of violent extremism in both countries, the use of organized crime to create the perception of an unsafe environment against the South Asian community in Canada, and interference in democratic processes.

In particular, the RCMP found evidence that Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada were using their official positions to gather information for the Indian government.

They also allege that people and companies in Canada were coerced and threatened into working for the Indian government by gathering information that could be used to target members of the South Asian community.

According to the 2021 census, over 2.3 million Canadians reported being of South Asian descent. That includes more than 20,000 in Windsor, nearly 2,000 in Sarnia, about 1,400 in Chatham-Kent and 175 in Huron County.

All of this evidence was presented directly to officials of the Government of India and the National Investigation Agency.
