Tren de Aragua member arrested for recruiting high school students to join the criminal gang

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested illegal immigrant Jorgenys Robertson Cova for recruiting high school students to join the violent crime gang Tren de Aragua (TdA). The arrest took place in the Sharpstown neighborhood in southwest Houston:

“A confirmed member of the Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang is now in custody after being arrested on Monday, October 7 by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) special agents in Houston (…) in cooperation with Houston Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), DPS arrested and took into custody Jorgenys Robertson Cova, 32, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.

Cova’s arrest and the community’s fears

Cova, 32, entered the country illegally Biden-Harris administration and was arrested after being identified as suspected recruiter for Tren de Aragua. The gang, which hails from Venezuela, is known for its extreme violence and criminal activity, and its spread into Texas has raised alarm among local authorities:

“Cova was arrested after a DPS special agent assigned to the Houston Texas Anti-Gang Center (TAG) was tipped off in late September about a suspected TdA member living in the Houston area and an asylum hearing in Houston on October 7.
Further investigation revealed that Cova was wanted for theft out of Pearland, Texas. During the course of the investigation, investigators discovered tattoos on Cova’s arms, including a five-pointed crown as well as a clock and roses – all known TdA markings.”

Fox 26 Houston first reported the arrest and interviewed several Sharpstown residents who spoke out growing concerns about security in the region. One resident noted that the community has already been affected by the news and is calling for greater police intervention to prevent the situation from escalating:

“I think it is bad for the neighborhood and the community and I think the police and authorities need to do something about it before it becomes a serious situation,” they said.

Response from Governor Abbott

Cova’s arrest is part of a series of actions taken by Texas authorities in response to the crime growing threat from TdA.
